Data Science

Biomedical Informatics Platform, (LOOP BMIP)

The LOOP BMIP consolidates clinical data and makes it accessible to establish and promote an interdisciplinary, data-driven research culture.

This includes:

  • Integrating, storing, and maintaining project-specific databases, as well as harmonizing clinical data from patients of Zurich’s university hospitals. Interoperability with the national SPHN (Swiss Personalized Health Network) is ensured in this process.
  • Developing a secure infrastructure for data exchange between the LOOP BMIP and Zurich’s university hospitals, guaranteeing full data and patient protection.
  • Building an infrastructure for the application of artificial intelligence (AI) in medicine to enhance patient care.

The LOOP BMIP is a key component of the digital transformation in Zurich’s university hospitals and is therefore central to data-driven research in medicine.

The LOOP BMIP builds on the outcomes of the SPHN initiative, both in terms of governance and IT structures. The core technical element is the “Leonhard Med” research IT platform at ETH Zurich, which is also part of the national BioMedIT network. This enables data exchange at the national level in the future.

A crucial aspect is ensuring that the new research infrastructure complies with legal requirements for patient and data protection. To this end, the development of The LOOP BMIP is being closely coordinated with the Data Protection Commissioner of the Canton of Zurich.

The LOOP Zurich BMIP Projects

The LOOP Zurich BMIP projects drive the development and implementation of a sustainable infrastructure, supporting the integration of novel and complementary types of health-related data such as -omics data, images, and/or quasi-real-time data (high-frequency recordings) into The LOOP Zurich BMIP.
