Biomedical Informatics Platform (LOOP BMIP)

Data for the Medicine of the Future

The LOOP BMIP brings clinical data together and makes it available in order to establish and promote an interdisciplinary, data-driven research culture.

This includes:

  • the integration, storage, and maintenance of project-specific databases, as well as the harmonization of clinical patient data from the Zurich university hospitals, with interoperability with the national Swiss Personalized Health Network (SPHN) being essential;
  • the development of a secure infrastructure for data exchange between the LOOP BMIP and the Zurich university hospitals that guarantees full data protection and patient privacy;
  • the development of an infrastructure for applying artificial intelligence (AI) in medicine to improve patient care.

How Does the LOOP BMIP Work?

Each hospital exports its clinical data into a secure IT environment (Leonhard Med, ETH Zurich; gray frame) that remains under the full control of the hospitals (red background). Available, research-relevant data from all hospital datasets can be accessed through a portal. Cohort-building functions make it possible to group data for specific research questions and clinical trials. Once a project meets all legal and ethical requirements, it is approved and the corresponding data is transferred to the project area of The LOOP BMIP. Data exploration within The LOOP BMIP environment (blue background) can lead to novel biomedical insights and innovative diagnostic and therapeutic (DX/TX) options for patient care. It also enables the development of new data services, including AI-supported applications that can be integrated into the hospitals’ internal systems.

The initial build-out of the LOOP BMIP is complete. Following an intensive testing phase, the platform will be made available to researchers at the end of October 2026. A framework agreement between the supporting institutions governs data exchange and data use and will considerably reduce the administrative burden for users.

The platform team is now responsible for ensuring the secure and efficient operation of the LOOP BMIP, for quality assurance, and for the further expansion of the platform through ongoing updates to the hospitals’ databases, the integration of new data types (see Platform Projects, among others), and the onboarding of additional partners.
