Mandate and Objectives

The LOOP Zurich is a medical center for translational research and precision medicine. It fosters interdisciplinary and inter-institutional collaboration in order to understand disease mechanisms with greater precision and to develop innovative treatments – for the benefit of patients and society.

From Discovery to Application

At the heart of its activities is the efficient translation of scientific findings into medical practice. The LOOP Zurich follows a systematic approach that closely links data-driven methods, biomedical informatics analyses, and clinical research in order to strengthen personalized healthcare over the long term.

Interdisciplinary Consortia with a Clinical Focus

The LOOP Zurich supports interdisciplinary research consortia designed to address complex medical questions. Crucially, the funded projects do not stop at generating scientific insights but are consistently advanced all the way to clinical testing. The focus is on projects with clear translational potential and tangible added value for patients.

Scientific and Infrastructural Foundation

The projects of The LOOP Zurich build on the scientific expertise of its researchers and on a continuously evolving, state-of-the-art research infrastructure. Its core pillars are biomedical informatics, quantitative biomedicine, and molecular biology. Extensive biobanks and databases, together with the targeted use of artificial intelligence (AI), play an increasingly important role.

Platforms as a Strategic Backbone

A key strategic pillar of The LOOP Zurich is the development of powerful platforms that systematically connect research and clinical practice. The biomedical informatics platform The LOOP BMIP consolidates clinical data from the four partner hospitals as well as data from the technology platforms and makes them available specifically for research purposes; its initial build-out was successfully completed in 2025. In addition, The LOOP Zurich has been mandated to create a UMZH biobank catalog and to link it with The LOOP BMIP, so that biological samples can be located efficiently and connected to patient data over the long term. Platform projects continuously expand the range of applications for this infrastructure, ensuring its sustainable further development.
